Summary

We worked together with highly successful influencers Mimi and Alex Ikonn, who co-founded Intelligent Change, the company behind the best-selling ‘Five-Minute Journal.’ Together, we crafted the app Habits, a personal goal-tracking app that helps you focus on attainable little things to change your life.

Benefits of improving step-by-step

Mimi and Alex Ikonn are firm believers in the idea that to achieve what you want from life, whether learning a new skill or living a healthier lifestyle, it’s essential to establish a routine. They came to Z1 after having tried many habit trackers and not finding any that met their usability and design requirements.

Many people doubt their ability to reach their goals because they are overwhelmed by the journey and the size of their dreams. To ideate Habits’ UI, we started from the basis that there isn’t a magic formula or a shortcut to long-lasting success, but focusing on attainable little things helps you stay on your path.

“Greatness is a lot of small things done well. Day after day, workout after workout, obedience after obedience, day after day.”

These words by Ray Lewis, former professional American football player and New York Times best-selling author, inspired us.

“In order to succeed in becoming the person we want to be, we must first be capable of imagining exactly who that person is. We set goals and create a clear vision of where we want to go and what we want to embody. We identify our best qualities and the ones we wish to improve upon. We use vision to achieve greatness. Hard work becomes meaningful as we take every step toward our vision.”

Alex Ikonn, Founder of Intelligent Change.

When improving your wellbeing, UI Design matters

Habits is a tracking app that allows users to identify their strengths and weaknesses and pinpoint key areas for improvement. Its founders were sure an app would hold users accountable for their development, thus keeping them honest about what they’ve accomplished and where they need to improve.

With clear ideas on how they wanted the app to look and function, Alex and Mimi teamed up with us to make this habit-tracking app a reality. We focused on allowing users to keep tabs on their progress while encouraging them to stick to their personalized, plan-based goals.

With a look and feel dictated by the already successful Intelligent Change brand, we put loads of effort into organizing the content in a way users feel ultra comfortable with.

“Measuring and tracking are key to understanding if we are achieving optimal performance”

Alex Ikonn, Founder of Intelligent Change.

Precious illustrations

The app has plenty of freehand drawings by Fran Pulido, who took advantage of the natural flaws of this process and the overlapping of different areas as a sign of personality.

“The pieces had almost no development in the sketch phase. As soon as I had a composition that I liked and fit in the interface, I made the final result in Photoshop. This added a high volume of spontaneity and naturality to the final result.”

Different habits, different calculations

The biggest challenge we faced on a technical level was the statistical calculation. Our backend developers did a great job breaking down the different types of habits with the particularities that each one has. On the frontend, we worked hard on the presentational logic, for example, when calculating the percentages, showing the values in the graphs, and managing time zones for notifications and reminders.

We used React Native for mobile development, Django for the backend—and AWS lambdas to make calculations faster and easier. iOS widgets were another interesting asset we implemented for Habits to make it even more user-friendly so that the users can access their goals routines by a simple swap.

Product launch

HeadingHabits turned out to be one of the finest UIs we’ve ever created. Thanks to its inspiring design and brand messaging, the Design Rush marketplace named it one of the best app designs of 2023.
